Switching to winter tires: From when and how to proceed?
According to Act No. 361/2000 Coll., on road traffic, drivers of vehicles in categories M and N must use winter tires if there is snow, ice, frost on the road, or if such conditions can be expected, from November 1 to March 30. The exception is roads marked with sign C15a "Winter Equipment," where winter tires are mandatory regardless of the date. Experts recommend switching to winter tires when daily temperatures drop below 7 degrees Celsius. In these conditions, the road surface temperature, especially on bridges, approaches zero, and winter tires perform better. When changing tires yourself, pay attention to wheel balancing. Incorrect balancing can negatively affect driving characteristics and cause uneven wear, not only of tires but also of the chassis.
When is it time for new winter tires?
If the tread depth of winter tires falls below 4 mm (for vehicles up to 3,500 kg) or below 6 mm (for vehicles over 3,500 kg on the driving wheels), the tires lose their self-cleaning effect, which increases braking distance and requires their replacement. It is not recommended to use tires up to the legal limit, as they may lose their driving properties, especially on snow. Worn or old tires may be more prone to punctures and pose a safety risk on the roads. Tires older than six years should be replaced, as they may lose their original properties and become hazardous.
